Jan 29, 2026 at 9:46 AMLiebherr has delivered three LHM 550 mobile harbor cranes with electric drive to Seaboard Marine. These cranes are equipped with a tower extension and special support plates to optimize container and multipurpose handling in the ports of Miami and Houston. The delivery is part of a long-term partnership that began in 2001 and already includes eight Liebherr cranes.
The new cranes are intended to increase efficiency at two significant trade locations in the USA. In PortMiami, where Seaboard Marine recorded the largest freight volume of over 1.1 million TEU in 2024, the cranes will enhance productivity at the berths and support growth in refrigerated and breakbulk cargo transport. In the Port of Houston, which handled more than 4.1 million TEU last year, the additional crane capacity will provide more flexibility in container handling.
Technical Features and Benefits of the New Cranes
The LHM 550 mobile harbor cranes are suitable for New-Panamax ships and offer a reach of up to 54 m as well as a configurable lifting capacity of 104 t. The electric drive of the cranes is designed for future shore power initiatives, while the hydrostatic drive technology ensures smooth operation under varying load conditions. These features help reduce turnaround times and increase efficiency in port operations.
The individual adaptations of the cranes, such as tower extensions and special paintwork, are tailored to the operational requirements of Seaboard Marine. The cranes are also prepared for environmentally friendly operation to meet future standards for the electrification of ports.
Service and Support from Liebherr
Liebherr offers a comprehensive service network supported by Liebherr USA. This network ensures quick response times and maximum availability of the cranes. Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales Mobile Harbor Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock, emphasizes the importance of collaboration: “This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to sustainable solutions and reliable operations.”
In addition to technical solutions, Liebherr provides training for crane operators as well as digital tools such as the smartApp for continuous performance monitoring. These measures aim to optimize crane utilization and safety standards in operations.
The partnership between Liebherr and Seaboard Marine aims to meet rising trade volumes and sustainability goals by deploying durable and adaptable equipment in dynamic port environments.
