Jan 23, 2026 at 4:11 PMContargo has received 33 new battery-electric tractor units of the DAF XD Electric type. These vehicles will be deployed at 15 locations in Germany and represent another step in the company’s decarbonization efforts. With the integration of these new trucks, the number of electric trucks in operational use increases to a total of 90. The implementation of all projects promised under the funding program for light and heavy commercial vehicles with alternative, climate-friendly drives (KsNI) has been successfully completed, while the expansion of charging infrastructure at some locations is still ongoing.
Technical Details and Sustainability Aspects
The DAF XD Electric is powered by electric motors with an output of 350 kW. The energy supply is provided by five lithium iron phosphate battery packs. Kristin Kahl, Managing Director of Contargo Truck Fleet GmbH & Co. KG, emphasizes the advantages of this technology: “The conscious decision for this technology means: no cobalt, no nickel, high lifespan, and full charging capacity – a clear commitment to greater sustainability even in batteries.”
Michael Starke, also Managing Director of Contargo Truck Fleet GmbH & Co. KG, highlights that initial tests of electric trucks under real conditions were conducted in collaboration with DAF as early as 2019. The DAF XD Electric represents the next generation of these vehicles, resulting from the experiences gathered.
Christoph Fitz, Managing Director of DAF Trucks Deutschland GmbH, expresses positive sentiments about the continued collaboration: “We are very pleased that Contargo is continuing the path we started together seven years ago and is now integrating the new series of our electric trucks into the fleet in the second phase of collaboration.” He emphasizes the importance of long-term partnerships for the successful deployment of electric trucks.
Areas of Application and Strategic Orientation
The new tractor units will primarily be used in local transport for container transport in combined transport. With the expansion of the battery-electric fleet to a total of 90 vehicles, Contargo demonstrates that the transformation of the company is based on a clear strategic decision. Kristin Kahl explains: “Our transformation shows that available technologies can be consistently utilized and successfully scaled under real conditions. The path we have taken is clear: the further development of our fleet is consistently oriented towards electrification.”
Of the total 90 electric trucks at Contargo, along with the associated charging infrastructure, 86 vehicles were supported under the KsNI funding program of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. The coordination of this funding guideline is carried out by NOW GmbH, while the applications were approved by the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility.
