Jan 20, 2026 at 12:13 PMHong Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded an increase in passenger numbers to 61 million in 2025. The cargo throughput also exceeded a significant volume of more than five million tons, underscoring the airport’s role as a global air freight hub. Cargo volumes rose by 2.7% compared to the previous year, reaching 5.07 million tons. This increase was supported by strong demand for exports and transshipments, particularly on routes between Southeast Asia, Europe, and mainland China.
Strong December for Cargo Traffic
The month of December proved particularly successful for cargo traffic, with volumes rising by 3.6% to 462,000 tons. Transshipments even recorded a growth of 18%. Passenger traffic and flight movements also increased, but air freight remained a crucial factor for the overall performance of HKIA.
Vivian Cheung, the Chief Executive Officer of the Airport Authority Hong Kong, stated that the results confirm HKIA’s position as a leading international air transport hub in Asia. In 2025, the airport expanded its network by 30 new destinations and strengthened intermodal connectivity to the Greater Bay Area. This supported both passenger flow and efficiency in cargo traffic in the region.
