Hermes Fulfilment Modernizes Logistics Location in Haldensleben
Dec 5, 2025 at 6:00 PMThe Baria Serece Phu My port is located on the Thi Vai River and serves as a hub for ships from various regions of the world transporting different types of cargo, including agricultural raw materials, fertilizers, and general cargo. The increased productivity from the use of the LPS reduces ship layover times and provides a direct advantage for the port’s customers.
(Rostock Germany) Precision meets progress at the Phu My port. The LPS 550 takes over the handling of bulk goods with high throughput and combines a lifting capacity of 144 tons with a 48-meter long boom and Liebherr’s advanced hydrostatic drive. Its high-voltage electric drive ensures energy-efficient operation and is complemented by a diesel engine as a backup in case of power outages. The four-rope grab system improves material flow, while storm anchors and the robust construction ensure stability under difficult conditions. After commissioning, the crane exceeded expectations in performance tests, achieving up to 1,250 tons per hour.
Measurable Increases in Throughput at Vietnam’s River Port
The operator of Phu My recorded nearly 7 million tons of cargo in recent years, underscoring the need for reliable equipment with high cycle frequency. In its first year, the crane operated for 4,000 hours and was typically in use for up to 22 hours a day, highlighting its role as a cornerstone of the strategy to ensure the continuous operation of Baria Serece. With two berths totaling 620 meters in length and designed for ships up to 100,000 DWT, the terminal’s infrastructure is optimized for large bulk flows and rapid ship turnovers.
Performance tests at the terminal confirmed a peak performance of up to 1,250 tons per hour. This is made possible by the crane’s four-rope grab concept and hydrostatic drives, which allow simultaneous lifting, swinging, and tilting. This technology supports Vietnam’s growing trade volume, shortening unloading times for agricultural products and fertilizer carriers while ensuring adherence to schedules during seasonal peak times.
Space-Saving Design for Narrow Quays
The portal undercarriage allows the crane to travel on rails. The area beneath the portal remains free for trucks and service traffic, which is particularly advantageous on narrow quays. The portal design secures ground access and allows integration directly over conveyor lines for a continuous flow of cargo to storage. This accelerates handling processes and reduces congestion at the quay. The LPS 550 combines the reach and precision of a bulk handling machine with the flexibility to serve multiple berths and cargoes without reconfiguration.
Stability and Handling Speed
Liebherr’s regional service presence supports scheduled maintenance during the ships’ time windows and provides access to spare parts and technicians. This ensures operational uptime and predictable cycles for the heavily utilized bulk handling operation. “The technical decisions at Baria Serece were determined by space requirements, cycle time, and reliability,” explains Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales Port Mobile Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH. “A rail-bound portal crane with four-rope grab control offers the stability and handling speed that the terminal needs without restricting access to the quay for land logistics.”
The configuration lays the foundation for bulk handling in Phu My to keep pace with market demand while maintaining a compact quay area.
