Feb 11, 2021 at 7:30 AMThe intralogistics provider TGW Logistics Group GmbH from Marchtrenk, Austria, is constructing a new distribution center for Urban Outfitters in Kansas City, USA, supporting the fashion retailer in its growth trajectory. The new facility enables flexible handling of retail and online orders. The core element of the automation is FlashPick®: the intelligent solution for automatic piece picking.
(Marchtrenk) Urban Outfitters Inc. (URBN) is one of the leading lifestyle fashion retailers. The portfolio of the globally operating company includes the brands Anthropologie, BHLDN, Free People, Terrain, Urban Outfitters, Nuuly, as well as a food & beverage division. Recently, the fashion specialist TGW was commissioned to establish a highly automated solution for its new fulfillment center in Kansas City (USA). The go-live is already planned for 2023.
The centerpiece of the facility is FlashPick®, the intelligent solution for fully automated split-case picking. The single order management approach sets standards in terms of speed and flexibility – as well as in the combination of sales channels.
Efficiently Combine Retail and Online Orders
The design of the fulfillment center in Kansas City is based on the solution that TGW is currently building for Urban Outfitters in the UK. It includes, among other things, two intelligent, fully automated picking robots Rovolution and 46 manual picking workstations PickCenter One.
In the goods receiving area, incoming cartons are transferred to containers and stored. From the shuttle, the orders are sent to 46 high-performance goods-to-person workstations and then to packaging or shipping. The individual areas of the facility are connected by energy-efficient KingDrive® conveyor technology. All processes are monitored by the TGW Warehouse Software, which is connected via an interface to the customer’s Manhattan Warehouse Management System.
Urban Outfitters and TGW are closely collaborating on projects in the USA and the UK. Whether retail or online orders: the operational processes are the same for both sales channels. This brings a number of advantages and facilitates global employee training as well as maintenance processes.
Strong Partner
“TGW is a strong partner for URBN and has developed a tailored solution with agile thinking that allows us to align our speed and efficiency with the requirements of our rapidly growing global business,” emphasizes Melinda McClure, Executive Director North American Logistics at Urban Outfitters Inc. “The new distribution center in Kansas City will be highly automated, utilize robotics, and thus create the necessary capacity for our growth. TGW has helped us develop a modular solution that is both simple and flexible, adapting to the future needs of our customers.”
“The distribution center is a milestone and marks a new level in the collaboration between Urban Outfitters and TGW,” emphasizes Chad Zollman, CSO TGW North America. “TGW thus underscores its commitment to being the partner of choice for Urban Outfitters in intralogistics automation.”
